Samsung is one of the frontrunners in the smartphone camera tech and innovations. It is the only camera maker that has released a 108-megapixel sensor commercially which has been seen in various phones including Galaxy S20 Ultra and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. But it has intentions of taking the megapixel war to a whole new level as it revealed plans for a 600-megapixel sensor earlier this year.
It reveals that the 600MP offering will be a part of the ISOCELL sensor lineup. It will be capable of offering loss-less zoom during 4K and 8K video recording. Even if it is not completely loss-less, we can expect the noise to be much lower than other camera sensors.
Camera sensors with a higher megapixel count are surely beneficial in various situations but they are also known to have a bigger size and camera bump. Both these issues are also affecting Samsung’s 600MP camera development. The slide shows that in its current stage, the sensor has 0.8µm pixels size and is so huge that it is taking up about 12% area of the phone. It is further resulting in a camera bump of 22mm which is insanely huge.
There is no prize for guessing that the current sensor and bump sizers are not feasible enough for day-to-day usage. Samsung will surely have to find a way around these two issues before it can make the sensor available commercially. It is unlikely to happen anytime soon but we will keep you updated on all the related developments.
